Aperture

Æ//

The Aperture table manifests itself as a functional object where the ornamentation is not so much 'added' as it is created through the active process of 'subtracting.' The ornament, formed by the removal of material, regains meaning by transforming that same material into legs. Ornament and function seamlessly blend, resolving their apparent contradiction. At its best, ornament can take on a spiritual dimension that transcends the intellectual poverty of mere functionality and even enriches it.

The table itself is crafted from a solid 30mm thick aluminum slab, from which 32 holes are created using waterjet technology. The material is utilized here in its purest form, with no additions made outside of the slab itself. Through the perforations, the solid material becomes 'transparent' in an intriguing manner. The top and bottom surfaces of the tabletop are finely sanded, while the raw edges and perforations bear witness to the waterjet technique.

For ÆTHER/MASS, collaboration multiplies what is possible by getting access to the skills that have been mastered by others. For the making of this object, we worked closely together with the skilled artisans of Alton.
